EAGLE GROVE - Joseph Charles Thielen, the son of Mathias and Mary Magdalen (Wawers) Thielen, was born September 21, 1921, six miles east of Eagle Grove. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, attending country schools near Woolstock. Joe served in the United States Army during W.W. II, from July 10, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 1, 1945. Following his discharge, Joe worked for one year cooking for the construction workers on the Alaskan Highway. On December 27, 1949, Joe was united in marriage with Myrtle Minor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Joe was an owner and operator of Wimpy's Cafe, downtown Eagle Grove and then he and Myrt owned and operated Eagle Bowl for 46 years. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Men's Bowling Association, American Legion and the V.F.W. Joe enjoyed golfing and participated in the Senior Golf Tour. He was a lifetime fan of the Green Bay Packers, Chicago White Sox, Boston Celtics and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Joe truly enjoyed his time with his family and watching his grandkids and great-grandkids participating in their various activities.

Joe passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Hamilton Hospital in Webster City at the age of 86 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: John, Peter, Theodore and sister-in-law, Eleanor, Raymond, and Mathias and sister-in-law, Isabel; sister, Coletta Duitscher and brother-in-law, Harold; great-granddaughter, Amanda Lalor and nephew, Michael Duitscher. Joe is survived by his wife, Myrt Thielen of Eagle Grove; daughter, Barbara Willard and life partner, Brian Anderson of Woolstock, son, Mark Thielen and wife Deb of Eagle Grove, daughter, Mary Wolver and husband Steve of Urbandale and son, Mike Thielen of Eagle Grove; 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Chad) Carter of Fort Dodge, Jessica Willard of Eagle Grove, Joe Willard of Eagle Grove, Josh Wolver of Madison, WI, Erin Wolver, Sarah Wolver, Rachel Wolver all of Des Moines and Dylan Thielen of Eagle Grove, 5 great-grandchildren: Bailey, Damian, Madison and Alec Huffaker and Darian Wolver; sister, Betty Glowczewsky of Eagle Grove and brother, Anthony (Dorothy) Thielen of Batavia.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in Eagle Grove, with recitation of the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 a.m. in Eagle Grove with Father Nils Hernandez celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
