Marvin was born Oct. 22, 1929, the son of Lawrence and Katherine (Steenblock) Winters in Belmond. He attended rural schools in Belmond and then Mason City Schools. He honorably served his country in the Army from 1947 until 1949. On Dec. 1, 1948, at Jonesboro, Ga., he was united in marriage to Alice Gunter. They made their home in Rockford from the early '60s until 1986 when they moved to Mason City. Following their marriage he attended mechanical school in Atlanta but found he already knew more about mechanics than what was being taught. He always could fix engines and get them running and loved a challenge. As a professional mechanic he worked mostly on diesel engines and was employed at Floyd and Leonard, International Harvester, Rockford Brick and Tile, Ruan Leasing and for the last 16 years before his retirement in 1990 at Andrews Prestressed Concrete. His real love of cars was working on antique cars for Dick Alexandres, then Ray (Andy) Andrews Jr. and others. He always found time to slip someone's problems in and get them up and running again. Most of his education was self-taught and he could fix almost anything any time. In his spare time he enjoyed golf and drove his own race car early in life. One of the best trips he took was to the Grand Canyon and visiting family in Georgia, California and Missouri.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife Alice, of 59 years; four sons, Larry and his wife, Donna Winters of Godfrey, Ill; Dwight "Bryan" and his wife, Karen Winters, of Sun City, Calif.; Kirk and his wife Carol, of Rockford; and Rory and his wife, Deb, of Mason City; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgel and his wife Betty Winters and Ted and his wife Sandra Winters, all of Marble Rock; and many nieces and nephews. His son, Robert "Bob" Winters died in December 2007; his grandson, BJ Winters in March 2008; his parents and two brothers, Dick and Jerry also preceded him in death. Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
