Mrs. E.M. Smith

Pomeroy, Iowa--Mrs. E.M. Smith, nee Eva Margret Renner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Renner, was born Oct. 31, 1853, in Bureau county, Ill., and died June 7, 1939, at her home in Pomeroy at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 6 days. In 1854 she came with her parents in a covered wagon drawn by oxen to what was then Webster county, with Homer as the county seat. They settled in a log house on a homestead 12 miles south of Webster City in the present Hamilton county. When she was about 16, the family moved to Decatur county. While living there she was married to E. M. Smith of Webster City. Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Chicago, where they lived several years before going to Webster City, where they were in business many years.

They were the parents of two children, George W. Smith and the late Mrs. W. J. Julius, the former Mabel Smith, who died in the spring of 1924. The Smith family came to Pomeroy in 1904 and operated the hotel and livery stable for many years. Mr. Smith died Dec. 26, 1924. In July, 1937, while Mrs. Smith was doing her washing, she accidentally caught her hand in the wringer and since that time her daughter-in-law, Mrs. George Smith, had kept house for her. Just a few weeks before her death, she injured herself in a fall.

She leaves her son, George W. Smith of Fort Dodge; five grandchildren, William Julius of Fenton, Lewis Julius of Storm Lake, Mrs. Harold Lemmon of Fort Dodge, Claire Smith of Escondido, Cal, and Eugene Smith of Los Angeles, Cal; two great-grandchildren, Michael Julius and Rosalie Lemmon; two brothers, four sisters and other relatives.
