Last Rites At Pomeroy For George W. Smith, 76

Pomeroy, Iowa-George W. Smith, 76, died unexpectedly at his home in Pomeroy at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, from a heart condition thought to have been brought on by the extreme heat of the day. Mr. Smith had been active and in his usual good health until a few minutes before his death. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Michael L Powers Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith, who has been ill in the past several months, was unable to attend. Rev. Fred S...man of the Otho Congregational church officiated. Mrs. Leonard McPh... and Mrs. Lawrence Bloom... of Otho sang. Pallbearers were Richard Prange, Charles Hanson, Merle Hanson, Emil Johnson, Rex Beatman and Harrison Moench.

Mr. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Smith, was born May 30, 1879 in Chicago, Ill. From there he moved with his parents to Webster City, Iowa, and later to Eagle Grove. On Feb. 1, 1905, he married Anna Marie Handahl of Stanhope at Fort Dodge. The couple farmed in the Ft. Dodge and Otho territory for many years. He also followed the trade of a mason, both there and after coming to Pomeroy in 1937, when called here to be with his aged mother. They continued to make their home here after his mother’s death in 1939. For the past several years, Mr. and Mrs. Smith had spent much time at Ft. Dodge in the homes of their son, Clare, and daughter, Eva, and their families.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, two sons, Eugene of Durant, Calif. And Clare of Ft. Dodge, one daughter Mrs. Harold Lemmon of Ft. Dodge, seven grandchildren, and other relatives. Preceding him in death were two children, Everett Clifford and Opal Jane, and one sister, Mrs. Mabel Julius.
