Train victim was walking on tracks, did not acknowledge whistle
By: Luke Jennett

Ames firefighters and paramedics try to save a person who got hit by a westbound train at the old train depot in Ames. The man killed in a collision with a Union Pacific train Monday was walking along the tracks with his head down when the train approached him, according to a witness. Operators of the train said they blew the whistle several times to get his attention, but he didn't move, said Cmdr. Jim Robinson of the Ames Police Department.

Police identified the man today as Chad Allen Sanders, 38. He was struck near the Clark Avenue crossing near the Culver's restaurant. Sanders was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center shortly after the call came in to police at 3:19 p.m. He was pronounced dead at 4:01 p.m. Sanders had recently been living in Ames, but also stayed in Kelley at times, Robinson said. His family lives in Carroll.
