EAGLE GROVE — Vergil George Jacobsen, the son of George and Vernice (Orcutt) Jacobsen, was born March 16, 1919, in Hardy, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Hardy and graduated from Vernon High School in 1937 as class Salutatorian. The family moved to the farm south of Eagle Grove in 1941.

On May 29, 1946, Vergil was united in marriage to Viola Hinrichsen at Vincent, Iowa. They lived on the farm and he was a lifelong farmer until retiring in 1982, when they moved into Eagle Grove. Vergil was a 50 year member of the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church; a 50 year Mason - Bower Lodge #464, Eagle Grove and a member of El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids. He also served on the Eagle Grove Cooperative Board of Directors and was a longtime Farm Bureau member.

Vergil died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Villa Care in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Viola, and two brothers, Earl and Orville. Survivors include his son, Dr. Steven Jacobsen (Debra) of Fremont, Nebraska; son, Dennis Jacobsen (Cheryl) of Eagle Grove; daughter, Jan Minikis (Larry) of Thor; grandchildren: Deidra and Demera Jacobsen, Kari Jacobsen-Gagnow (Jeff), Bret Jacobsen, Trisha Minikis- Conklin (Chad), Stacy McIntire (Josh), Tara Johansen (Eric); 4 great- grandchildren,: Drew and Tate Conklin and Ava and Zane McIntire and a sister in law, Lillie Gronbach.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Mary K. Green, officiating. Burial will be Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Visitation is Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service to follow at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
