Wallace E. Carpenter died May 6, 2008 in Inver Grove Heights, MN. Services were held May 10 at the Dows Presbyterian Church with Pastor Paul Meierding and Stan Watne officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Wallace Elmer was born December 1, 1933 at home in Dows to Elmer Wallace and Caroline Alice Bennewitz Carpenter. He completed all his schooling in Clarion, graduating with the Class of 1951.

On January 23, 1954 Wally married Lila Hines at the Church of Christ in Clarion. They moved to Dows. As a young man Wally worked as a farm hand in the Dows and Galt area. Then he took a job with Hartzell's Produce and later the Farmer's Co-op where he worked in the station, went to farms to change tractor tires, and delivered propane. Wally was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he was baptized in 1961 and served on the Board of Elders. He was a Boy Scout Webelos leader. One of his greatest passions was the Dows Fire Department, where he served for 33 years as a volunteer, 25 as chief. Wally moved to Woodlyn Heights Health Care Center in Inver Grove Heights in 2001 after a series of health problems he and Lila had. He continued to fish, go to casinos, work puzzles, and pull pranks on the Woodlyn Heights staff.

Wally was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother Richard; brothers-in-law Martin Wearda and Jerry Mapes; and infant twin grandchildren Andrew and Sine Brunsvold. Wally is survived by children Linda (Mark) Brunsvold of Apple Valley, MN and Mike (Dianne) Carpenter of Guthrie Center; grandchildren Renee (Dean) Fitch of Des Moines, Lynne (Steve) Woods of Swan, Leilani (Mike) Walker of Des Moines, and Matthew and Sarah Brunsvold of Apple Valley; great-grandchildren Cody Fitch and Skyler and Misty Dawn Walker; siblings Carl (Cindy) Carpenter of Minburn, Karen (Lowell) Gaulke of Mt. Pleasant, Kathy Wearda of Hampton and Arlis Mapes of Swan; and sister-in-law Patricia of Booneville.
