LATIMER — Duane K. Nielsen, age 73, passed away Friday (Sept. 8, 2006) at his home in Latimer, Iowa. Funeral services for Duane Nielsen will be held on Tuesday Sept. 12, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer with Pastor Tom Cofer officiating. Burial will be in Marion Township Cemetery. Visitation for Duane Nielsen will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 11, 2006. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Duane Keith Nielsen, son of Velslev and Dena (Olk) Nielsen was born on Oct. 6, 1932, in Chapin, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Chapin, graduating from Chapin High School in 1950. After graduation he entered the United States Army, serving in Korea. On Feb. 19, 1956, Duane was united in marriage to Delores Friesleben at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. To this union two children were born. The family farmed north of Latimer for 11 years and then moved to Latimer.

Duane worked for Tuloma Gas in Rowan and then purchased the Standard Oil tank wagon in Latimer. He worked as an oil jobber for Standard Oil until he retired in 1992. Duane also worked in golf course maintenance at the Latimer Golf Course, helped local farmers during harvest, and drove school bus for 17 years. He was very active in the CAL school system. He umpired softball games around the state of Iowa for 40 years and was inducted into the Iowa Softball Umpires Hall of Fame in 2002. He also refereed volleyball for 26 years. He was the public address announcer for football and basketball games at CAL and received the IHSAA Mo Kelly Award for excellence in Public Address Announcing in 2006. He was active in the community serving as a volunteer fireman and mayor in Latimer. Duane was a life long member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and held several positions within the church including Elder and Deacon. He was a member of the Latimer Golf Club for many years.

Duane is survived by his wife, Delores; daughter, Jill, and her husband, Lee, of Latimer, son, Joel Nielsen, and his wife, Sharon, of Vermillion, S.D.; five granddaughters, Deidre and Shelby Schaefer, Kelly, Kasey and Kory Nielsen; and one brother, Bob Nielsen, of Winona, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Velslev and Dena.
