HAROLD E. "SKIP"' ALLEN -- Army Officer and Division Chief
Harold E. "Skip" Allen, 86, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who also worked for the Army Security Agency, died of prostate cancer Jan. 19 at the Hospice of Northern Virginia. A resident of Falls Church, he had lived in the Washington area off and on since 1954. Col. Allen was a native of Bossberg, Wash., and attended the University of Iowa.
He was a newspaper publisher and photographer in Clarion, Iowa, before World War II. He joined the Army in 1942 and served with the Signal Corps in Germany during World War II. His assignments also included Turkey and the Communications Security Agency, where he retired from military service in 1962 as chief of the logistics division. He continued with the logistics division as a civilian and retired in 1981 as chief of the fiscal and budget division. He was a Mason and a member of Falls Church Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, June B. Allen of Falls Church; three daughters, Sally J. Hammond of Vienna, Susan J. Fliedner of Cooper City, Fla., and Kathleen R. Kidwell of Chantilly; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
