Ellis B. Smith, 77, of Mason City, Iowa died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his home. He was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Leslie L. and Mary F. Grim Smith. He married Earleen Sells; she preceded him in death. He later married Lois Pilman. A daughter, Pam Kerr, and a stepson, Charles Pilman, preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith worked at a chicken hatchery in Shell Rock, Iowa, for four years, in turkey service at Nutrena Feeds and as a troubleshooter for turkey producers. He managed a turkey hatchery in New Haven, Iowa, in 1954, built a turkey hatchery and farm in Belmond, Iowa, in 1958 and worked at Illini Country Club. He retired as an assistant superintendent for Peoria Park District in 1986. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of American Legion, AMVETS and past president of the Lion's Club in Belmond, Iowa.
Survivors: wife, Lois; three sons, David (wife, Nancy) Smith of Auburn, Steve (wife, Ruth) Smith of Montgomery and Kevin (wife, Cathy) Smith of Springfield; three daughters, Maureen (husband, Paul) Jackson of Springfield, Teresa (husband, Todd) Winings of Roseville, Calif., and Cheryl (husband, Pete) Patrou of Webster City, Iowa; two stepsons, Douglas (wife, Tammy) Pilman of Peoria and Jerry (wife, Toni) Pilman of Brazil, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Lois (husband, Rick) Descamps of Washington; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Hurley Funeral Home, Mason City, the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating. Burial: Auburn Cemetery.
