CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --Rev. Monsignor Joseph A. Sullivan, 77, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, 2245 Chaney Road Apt. 1, died Monday evening, Jan. 18, 1999, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB, as main presider. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 6, 1921, in Dubuque, son of Daniel and Anna (Wiehl) Sullivan. He graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, and took his theological training at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained at St. Raphael's Cathedral on July 28, 1945, by Archbishop Henry P. Rohlman. He served as associate pastor at St. Patrick's, Watkins, 1945-46; St. Patrick's, Dubuque, 1946-49; St. Bernard's, Alta Vista, 1949-51; Sacred Heart, Dubuque, 1951; Visitation, Stacyville, 1951-52; St. John's, Waterloo, 1952-54; and Holy Ghost, Dubuque, 1957-58. He served pastorates at St. Peter's, Clermont, 1958-62; St. Bridget's, Postville, 1962-67; St. Cecilia's, Ames, 1967-73; St. Thomas Aquinas, Webster City, 1973-84; and Holy Name, Rockford, 1984-91. He retired in July 1991.

He served as dean of the Eagle Grove Deanery, 1981-84, and was appointed moderator of the Eagle Grove Deanery ACCW in 1982. He not only had a great love for God and neighbor, he also has a love and respect for nature. He especially enjoyed fishing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Raphael's Priest Fund or Sacred Heart Parish.
