Carrie Graham

Carrie Jones, one of seven children of Wareham and Zady Jones was born February 12, 1867 in Hardin County, Iowa, and passed away at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 1949 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Berger, which had been her home for the last nine years. She had reached the age of 82 years, eight months and eight days.

On March 20, 1887 she was united in marriage to Edward A. Graham at Quebec, Iowa and they started farming in Hardin County where they lived for 18 years. Four children blessed this union, Frank, Raleigh, Mabel and Isola, and came in 1905 with their parents to the farm in Excelsior township which Mr. Graham had purchased. There they farmed for nine years, then they moved to Lake Park in 1913 which has been home to them ever since. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding in 1937 and three years later on May 10, 1940 Mr. Graham passed away.

Besides mothering her own children Mrs. Graham opened her home to her two grandchildren Graham and Valene Porter after the death of their father, and they lived with her for six years. Mrs. Graham loved her home and her family and was satisfied to stay at home rather than joining clubs or going out in society. She did lovely hand work and was always busy creating beautiful things for her loved ones. Her greatest joy was to be with her children and grandchildren. Their interests and accomplishments meant much to her. Their many visits were the highlights of her life.

Shortly after the death of her husband she sold her home and went to live with her daughter Mabel, Mrs. Carl Berger, and husband. Through these nine years she has had their tender love and care and her wishes were their first consideration. During all that time she has suffered with gall stone attacks. The last two years she has needed almost constant care which was lovingly given by her four children who mourn the loss of a devoted mother.

The children are Frank I. Graham, Raleigh A. Graham, Mabel, Mrs. Carl Berger, all of Lake Park and Isola, Mrs. Leo Dillon of Hubbard. She also leaves six grandchildren, Floyd Graham of Mitchell, S.D., Ronald and Rodney Graham of Lake Park, Blanch, Mrs. Wayne Johnson of Ocheyedan, Graham Porter of Baraboo, Wisc., and Valene, Mrs. Wilbur Nelson of Webster City, Ia., and eight great grandchildren. Of her immediate family two members still survive, the oldest of the family a brother Will Jones, 93 of Milford; and the youngest of the family, Mrs. E. D. Sharar of Humansville, Missouri.

Funeral services were held at the Frank Graham home in south Lake Part at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, October 23 and at the Methodist church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. L. J. Runion in charge. Burial was in Silver Lake cemetery beside her husband.

A women's trio consisting of Mrs. ALlan McClain, Mrs. A.C. Myrick and Mrs. Hadley Shafer sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Lights of Home," the same songs as were used at the funeral of Mr. Graham. Mrs. C. E. Arnold was accompanist. Pall bearers were C. H. Christopherson, R. S. Herbert, Edwin Clark, Bill McFarland, L. N. Rowe and Glenn Dieterich.Besides the floral tributes a memorial fund was given by friends to the polio foundation in memory of Mrs. Graham.

Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Leo Dillon of Hubbard; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Graham and children of Mitchell, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Johnson and children of Ocheyedan; W. L. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. James McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Moritz of Milford; Mr. and Mrs. Clesson Ellis and Earl Jones of Dows; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dillon of Thompson; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Schwinger of Hubbard; Mr. and Mrs. Ulmont Marco of Wesley; Mrs. Cap Porter, Mrs. A. I. Sparkes, Mrs. Lawrence Halvorson and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wentler of Sioux Falls, S. D., and from Rembrandt, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Foval, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Berger, Mrs. Anna Mosbo, Mrs. Clara Branvold and Mrs. Olive Halvorsen.

Out of the fullness of our hearts, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for all the acts of helpfulness and words of sympathy bestowed upon us during the illness and since the death of our beloved mother. The memory of them will linger with us along the years. We thank you one and all.

The family of Mrs. Carrie Graham
