HAMPTON - Martha Mae Covell, 94, of Hampton, died Thursday (Feb. 9, 2006) at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hampton United Methodist Church with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Miller will officiate the service. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave. E. in Hampton.

On Oct. 14, 1911, Martha Mae Grover was born to Charles and Nellie (Jenkins) Grover of rural Dows. She grew up going to school in Dows, Alexander, and then to high school in Popejoy. On Oct. 19, 1929, she married Charley Covell in the Hampton United Methodist parsonage by Pastor J. Arthur Young. Later, they moved northeast of Hampton where they began a partnership farming. Martha loved fishing, dancing, cats, dogs, gardening, and crocheting. Her years were busy as a homemaker, farmhand and then the famous baker - "Martha's Home Bakery."

She leaves her daughter, Delores (Merle) Butt of Hampton; son, Chuck (Pat) Covell of Ames; three grandsons, Chuck (Sue) Butt of Phoenix, Ariz., Charles (Shannon) Covell of Ossian, and Christopher (Pam) Covell of Ames. Her only beloved granddaughter, Lynne, died June 9, 2000, of ovarian cancer; a great-granddaughter, Tanya Butt, of San Diego, Calif.; two grandsons, Scott Butt of San Diego and Sgt. James McKenna; three great-grandsons, Chad (Heidi) Hanson and Stephen L. (Lacey Prohaska) of Hampton, and Andrew Hanson of West Hollywood, Calif.; a grandson-in-law, Stephen C. (Mary) Hanson of Hampton; her brother, Raymond Grover of Lakewood, Calif; great grandchildren, Amy and Austin Covell of Ossion. She has four great-great-grandchildren, Ally Lynne, Ashlyn Rae and Avery Jo Hanson of Hampton and Trysten McKenna of Marion. Preceding her in death is her beloved husband, Charley; and granddaughter, Lynne Hanson; her parents; five brothers, Dennis (Lily) of Clarion and Willard, Robert, Frank and Fred Grover of Hampton; a host of many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
