Hazel Anderson, 92, of Dows, died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Memorial services for Hazel Anderson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Dows with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to services at the church. There will be no viewing as the body has been cremated.

Hazel, the daughter of Martin and Rena Battin Ellenberger, was born February 14, 1910, near Bloomfield, Iowa. She grew up in the Bloomfield area, where she attended school. Hazel graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1926. She then attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Des Moines. Hazel was united in marriage to V.O. "Andy" Anderson on February 26, 1930, in Princeton, Mo. To this marriage was born a daughter, Kay. The couple made their home in Davenport, where they were the district managers for the Des Moines Register. The couple returned to a farm near Dows in 1936. They helped operate the family hardware store, Anderson Supply, in Dows. After the death of Andy's father, Andy and Hazel continued to operate the store. They eventually expanded, with the opening of Anderson Service in Webster City. After the death of Andy in 1972, Hazel continued to run the stores, retiring when she sold the businesses. Hazel lived in the Dows Care Center and was currently a resident at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility. Hazel and Andy loved to travel and traveled extensively throughout the world. The couple was involved in an international antique car collector's club. Hazel enjoyed running her business as her hobby, but she also enjoyed reading. She was a member of the Liberty Club, Eastern Star, Morgan Study Club and the Presbyterian Church in Dows.

Hazel is survived by a brother, Carl Ellenberger and wife, Kathrine, of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, Hector Anderson and his wife, Ruby, of Dows; eight nieces and nephews, Betty Rupe and husband, Dwayne, of Valentine, Neb., Victor Carl Blecharczyk and wife, Kathryn, of Marysville, Kan., Harriett Ellenberger of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Jim Ellenberger and wife, Marcia, of Perry, Robert Anderson of Ames, Roger Anderson and wife, Mary, of Prior Lake, Minn., Frank Vitale of Sharon, Wis., and Linda Vitale of Geneva, Fla.; many great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of friends. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; daughter, Kay, and sister, Florence. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
