Maxine S. Matacio, 85, of Berrien Springs, Michigan died early Monday, October 16, 2006, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Funeral services for Maxine and her husband, Paul, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 16, at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs, with burial following in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pastor Arne Swanson of Pioneer Memorial Church will officiate. Memorial contributions in Maxine’s name may be made to Andrews University Scholarship Fund for Worthy Students, Your Story Hour, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Maxine was born May 12, 1921, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Chester and Gladys (Johnson) Hunt. On September 15, 1946, in Eagle Grove, she married Paul M. Matacio. Maxine was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and she earned a Master’s Degree from George Williams College in Chicago. In addition to being a wife and mom, she taught physical education on the college, secondary, and elementary school levels. Upon moving to Michigan, she taught for the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, including the elementary church school in Eau Claire and the Village SDA church school in Berrien Springs. In her leisure time, Maxine enjoyed bird watching, growing plants, and reading. She was a member of the Garden Club, as well as the Community Library Book Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Lauren Matacio of Berrien Springs; two sons--Douglas (Verla) Matacio of Alberta, Canada, and Timothy Matacio of St. Charles, Illinois; two granddaughters--Jamie and Darcy, and two grandsons--Cory and Trevor; three sisters--Rosalie Mellor of Blackberry, Minnesota, Phyllis Howell of Corona, California, and Bonnie Thompson of Carlsbad, California; and a brother, Roger Hunt of Arlington, Texas. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on October 13, 2006; two brothers--Jerry Hunt of Lakefield, Minnesota, and Chester Hunt, Jr., of Eagle Grove, Iowa; and by her parents.
