November 5, 1914THE PASSING OF TJERAN CHELSVIG
Death Comes to This Aged Citizen After Brief Illnes
Tjeran Chelsvig passed away at his home northeast of town last Thursday morning, after an illness of but one week.
Mr. Chelsvig was one of a number of honored pioneers who came into this community while it was yet a wilderness, but the manly spirit of devotion of such as he to an appointed duty has been the direct means of converting it from what it was to what it is today. All honor is due to the self sacrificing and sturdy men of yesterday. The nobility of character of each of the old settlers now departed we have known, and the deceased was one of them, is a tradition they have left to posterity, whose tempering influence will undoubtedly hold sway over the coming generations of our people.
He was a man of truth, devoted to the teachings of the Master, an active and ardent church worker, having affiliated himself with the membership of Bergen's congregation, within whose fold he had worshipped for many years. He was born in Norway on Sept 29, 1834. There he grew to manhood and while yet in Norway he took unto himself a bride. Shortly after being married they came to this country, settling in Story County, Iowa which event took place in the year 1864. About five years after coming to this country they located on the farm northeast of town where they have since made their residence. Three years have passed since his wife died.
He is mourned by two sons, Joe Chelsvig of Roland and Nels Chelsvig of Texas; two daughters; Mrs. Chas. Henderson of Des Moines and Mrs. Andrew Jacobson of Belmond; and three sisters all living in Wright county.
The funeral services were held in Bergens church last Monday and his pastor Rev. Smedal was the officiating clergyman. Relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects to the departed one. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Roland cemetery.
