Feb. 11, 1912 - Feb. 29, 2008

Adolphe Tendall, 96, formerly of Ames, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 29, at Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. His body has been gifted to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy in Iowa City. A memorial service will be at a later date in Boone.

Adolphe Tendall was born Feb. 11, 1912, near Helmar in Kendall County, Ill., the son of Thomas and Hannah (Anderson) Tendall. The family moved to Iowa when he was 3 years old and began farming in Wright County. He was the youngest child and had eight siblings, five brothers and three sisters. He was proud to have lived longer than any of his siblings. He farmed in Wright County for 42 years before retiring and moving to Ames in 1975.

He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and activities at Heartland Senior Center in Ames. He loved playing croquet, horseshoes and hunting pheasants. He enjoyed visiting with people and will be remembered for his sense of humor and his smile.

He is survived by four children, Elaine Overton, Harold Tendall, Jean Lien and Russell Tendall; numerous grandchildren; one niece, Donna Severtsgaard, of Vinton; and longtime friend, Ramona Esbeck, of Ames. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vera Hagen Tendall; and adopted daughter, Jean Lipscomb.

Memorials may be given to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 2211 130th St., Belmond, IA, 50421. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
