CHAPIN - Robert L. Bailey, 76, of Chapin, Iowa died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the Sheffield Care Center. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs presiding. Interment will be in the spring at Wayside Cemetery, Chapin. His family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Robert Bailey.

Robert L. Bailey was born on June 3, 1931, in Thayer, Iowa, son of Jesse Ross and Maymie Pear (Petershon) Bailey. Bob attended school at Thayer, Iowa. Robert was united in marriage with Delores Stiffler on July 23, 1950, in Osceola, Iowa. They made their home in Thayer and he worked for the CB&Q Railroad for several years. In 1955, Bob and Delores moved to Chapin and he worked for several years at the Sheffield Brick and Tile and then the Mason City Stone Plant for nine years. In 1965 he started working for Greimann Brothers in Chapin and retired from there in 1997. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He also enjoyed stock car racing and for several years he had his own stock car and raced at Wright County Raceway in Belmond. Bob enjoyed working on cars and helped at Mike's Repair in his retirement until his health declined.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; two daughters: Marlene (Jerry) Harms, of Evansdale, and Marilyn (Lee) Uhlenhopp, of Marshalltown; son: James, of Chapin; two sisters: Phyllis (Donald) Clark, of Afton, and Ruby (Ronald) Cornelison, of Lorimor; two brothers: Gary (Connie) Bailey, of Winterset, and William (Marjorie) Bailey, of Enid, Okla; sister-in-law: Shirley Bailey, of Creston; six grandchildren: Jamie (Patrick) Hollaway; Jeremy (Sara) Harms; Jerret (Janet) Thompson; Robert Thompson and Haley and Sierra Bailey; five great- grandchildren: Johanna and Jaydon Thompson, Gunner Thompson, Bailey Hollaway and Jana Harms; and many nieces and nephews. Bob is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Leland Eckardt.
