NELS CHELSVIG
The community was saddened Saturday, August 23 when folks heard that Nels Chelsvig had passed away at 10:30 a.m. in the Belmond Hospital. He had not been feeling well for a few days and became very ill on Friday and was taken to the hospital that evening.
Nels Chelsvig, aged 81 years, was born July 25, 1866 in Story County, where he spent his childhood. In February, 1888 he was united in marriage to Rande Anderson of Roland and they started housekeeping on a farm near Roland. They lived in Texas one year and farmed for 20 years on farms in Wright and Hancock counties, retiring and moving to Goodell 25 years ago.
Mr. Chelsvig served as town marshall and caretaker of the community hall for many years.
He was a member of the Lutheran church, a good citizen and numbered his friends by his acquantances.He leaves to mourn the following children, Mrs. Charles Killbourne (Clara) and Charles of Des Moines; Mrs. Frank Noren (Julia) of Chicago; Chester of Leroy, Minn.; Mrs. Carl Daniels (Nellie) of Westpointe, Minn.; Arthur of Kanawha; Bert of Des Plaines, Ill.; Mrs. E. Robinson (Evelyn) of Goodell and Raymond in the U.S. Navy stationed at Norfolk, Va and 25 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the home and 2 p.m. at the Evangelical United Brethren church with the Rev. C.F. Spencer officiating. Burial was in the family lot at the Amsterdam cemetery. All of his children and their families were present for the service.
