Howard W. Gus, 83, of Boone died on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at the Boone County Hospital. Howard was born on January 30, 1921 in Dows, Iowa to Carl F. & Florence M. (Rose) Guse. He attended school in Hardin and Franklin County, and graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1938. Following high school, he farmed and then entered into the US Navy, serving from 1942 to 1946, and then serving in the US Navy Reserve to 1956. He was a Navy pilot, a dive-bomber and also was a Landing Signal Officer. After serving in the military, he farmed near Corwith, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1951 with a degree in Agricultural Education, and with half of his master's degree completed. He then taught high school Vocational Agriculture for one year in Oskaloosa, Iowa where he also sold New York Life Insurance. He then transferred to Riceville High School, where he taught Vocational Agriculture until 1956. He moved to Boone in 1956 to start working as a State Farm Insurance Agent. In 1969 he entered into the Iowa National Guard Reserve, and for 11 years he served as an Army Reserve Aviator with the 185th. Field Artillery, flying out of Boone. He was an independent State Farm Insurance Agent for 31 years until he retired in 1986. Howard was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, and he enjoyed woodworking and playing golf.

Howard is preceded in death by parents; grandson, Jacob Baranosky; granddaughter, Sally; 2 sisters, Edith and Dora; 2 brothers, Harry and Melvin Guse; He is survived by his son, Steven H. Gus & his wife, Kathy of Seattle, Washington; son, David B. Gus & his wife, Nancy of Fort Collins, Colorado; son, Steven Earl Gus & his wife, Kathy of Boone, Iowa; daughter, Sherry Baranosky & her husband, Jim of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Susan K. Jacobson & her husband, Mick of Boone, Iowa; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Joyce Guse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The Body has been cremated. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home at 5th. & Story Streets of Boone, with Captain Eric Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 22, one hour prior to service time with family present to receive friends. Burial of the cremated remains will be at the Fairview Cemetery of Dows, Iowa on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with full military honors and presentation of the United States Flag by the Watson-Beach Post 523 of Dows. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army of Boone. The Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home at 5th & Story Streets of Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
