HULL, Iowa -- Mrs. Mary Van Voorst, 61, of Hull passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Sioux Center Community Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, Iowa, with the Rev. Matt Yaley officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Mary Jane was born Feb. 17, 1942, at Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Kathryn (Staley) Rutherford. She was raised at Eagle Grove, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. As a young adult, she continued to live in Eagle Grove. On Aug. 10, 1976, she married Henry A. Van Voorst at St. Paul, Minn. They made their home in Texas, where Mary attended a vocational school to become a registered dietician. In 1984, they moved to Northwest Iowa, and since 1988 they have lived at Hull. Mrs. Van Voorst was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she shared her art talent in the Awana youth program. She was an accomplished painter and Bob Ross artist instructor. She traveled around Iowa, giving presentations to many church and community groups. Mary enjoyed music, fishing and riding motorcycles. Her favorite saying was, "Don't worry, be happy."

Survivors include her husband, "Dutch"; three children, Jackie Ruud of Akron, Iowa, Martin Schroeder of Beeville, Texas, and Koren Van Voorst of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandson, Matthew Ruud; a brother and his wife, Lloyd "Ike" and Dianne Rutherford of St. Paul; and a sister and her husband, Cindy and Tom Redenius of Fort Dodge, Iowa. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Randy Schroeder; and a brother, Elmer Rutherford. Memorials will be directed to the Bob Ross Foundation and Vital Signs Ministries.
