BELMOND - Ina M. Smith, 92, of Belmond, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2007) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Funeral services for Ina Smith will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial will be in Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Ina Myrtle Smith, the daughter of Alvis and Tillie (Severson) Berhow, was born Sept. 27, 1915, at the farm east of Kanawha. She was baptized at West Lake Lutheran Church as an infant and was confirmed in Kanawha Lutheran Church on June 16, 1929. She graduated from the eighth grade on June 12, 1929, and attended Kanawha High School for one year. She then worked in numerous homes of neighbors and others as a homemaker's helper.
She was united in marriage to William Smith on April 12, 1935, at Garner. They were blessed with five children, Richard, Roger, Sharon, Nancy and Alvie. Ina was a devoted mother who enjoyed her family and being a homemaker. She was a person who had to be busy; she worked at Hildman's Variety Store for three years and worked for P&G Grocery for a time. She then was receptionist for Dr. W.W. Weisbrad for 16 years. It was a rewarding, important part of her life; she retired on Sept. 27, 1977. She and Bill enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and spending time with their family. Ina was very active in her church, working in many organizations and projects. She enjoyed quilting and looked forward to helping with church quilts every fall. She was a member of Pearl Circle and ELCW many years.
Ina leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Sharon and husband, Larry McMurray, of Ackley, and Nancy Schimp of Belmond; three daughters-in-law, Carol, Ellen and Shirley; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Orpha and her husband, Clifford Trees, of Riverside, Calif., Ardith Mickelson of Klemme, and Thelma Boller of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; one brother, Mike Berhow and wife, Arlene, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Lucille Berhow of Kanawha, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; sons, Richard, Roger and Alvie; sisters: Viola Duffrens, Delores Johnson, Marlys Schwichtenberg and Alva Davis; an infant brother, Alvis Berhow Jr.; brother LeRoy "Bud" Berhow; step-grandson, Rodney Smith; and son-in-law, Larry Schimp.
