WALLA WALLA, WA - Lyle E. Shields of Athena died Aug. 14, 2007, at Walla Walla General Hospital. He was 83. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater with the concluding service and inurnment in Athena Cemetery.

Mr. Shields was born April 5, 1924, in Goldfield, Iowa, to William and Della Henderson Shields. After his graduation from high school, he joined the Merchant Marine, stationed out of Sydney, Australia. He married Mavis Bailey in Sydney on Aug. 19, 1944. In 1947 he and his wife settled in Pendleton. In 1952, they moved to Athena. Mr. Shields worked in the farm fertilizer business, starting with Farm Chemicals, then McGregor and Wheatland. He also drove pea trucks for Smith Cannery and wheat truck for the Quentin Rugg family. He served as a Boy Scout leader for 4 years and loved to dabble in singing. He made a record of White Christmas in the 1950s. He also became an instrumental part of the Falcon's Drum and Bugle Corps and served as scorekeeper for McEwen High School. He also supported athletics by driving bus for athletic and school excursions. Mr. Shields was an avid old car enthusiast and was involved in antique swap meets. He restored a 1931 Model A Ford. He was a member of the Model A Car Club and the Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis. On Sept. 13, 2004, he married Anne Wilson in Winnemucca, Nev. He is survived by his wife, Anne; daughter Diana Doherty of Pasco, Wash.; son Mike Shields of Canby; stepsons James Wilson and Milton Wilson, both of Walla Walla, and David Whipple of Ontario; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two step-grandchildren. Mr. Shields also was preceded in death by a sister; brother; and stepdaughter.
