Dean Heitkamp, 48, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa from neuroendocrine cancer. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2007 at the Johnston Evangelical Free Church.

Dean was born March 18, 1959 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Rita and Irvin Heitkamp, Jr. He spent his early years in Clarion, Iowa. He was active in scouting, earning the Eagle Scout award. Dean graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1977. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Landscape Design in 1981. He was united in marriage to Le Ann Kubik on November 12, 1988. Dean had a passion for plants and designing gardens, and started his own landscaping business, Gardens by Design. His designs won the "Best Landscaping Award" for the Home Show Expo in 2001 and 2002. Dean was a devoted family man and enjoyed being involved in his sons' school activities and sporting events. He was an active member of Johnston Evangelical Free Church.

Dean is survived by his wife, Le Ann; sons, Brett (14) and Taylor (12); mother, Rita Heitkamp of Urbandale and sisters, Colleen Heitkamp and Janet Heitkamp both of Laurel, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Heitkamp, Jr.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Johnston Evangelical Free Church., NW 62nd Avenue at 100th Street in Johnston. The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Johnston Evangelical Free Church or to Mercy Hospice, Johnston, Iowa.
