LOIS DELAPLANE -- West Des Moines

Lois Delaplane, 88, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, October 28, 2007, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2007, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.

Lois was born May 24, 1919, in Carroll, IA, the third of four children to Earl and Mary Delaplane. She graduated from Carroll High School in 1937, where she was active in sports, choral music group and playing violin. She graduated from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, majoring in Physical Education and minoring in English. Her first teaching position was with Belmond High School from the fall of 1942 until 1947, where she taught English with her lifetime friend Bettie Blough. She later taught Physical Education at several schools including Roosevelt, Washington Irving and at Tech until her retirement in the spring of 1982. Lois enjoyed helping students at VanGinkel Bowling Alley, luncheons with her retired friends and her dogs. She was an avid bowler and belonged to several leagues.

Lois is survived by her sisters, Marguerite Olson of Estherville and Dorothy Orr of Las Vegas; niece, Stephanie Roach of Urbandale; nephews, Stephen Olson of Arnolds Park and Greg Olson of Sun City, AZ; former foster daughter and friend, Tammy Nelsen of Des Moines, several great nieces and nephews and many great friends. Lois was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Paul; lifetime friend, Betty Blough and several beloved pets, most recently, Greta, her precious westie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Animal Rescue League.
