Charles Frederick KRUGER

KRUGER, DEREMO, WESSELS, TUTT

Charles "Chuck" Kruger, 90, Belmond, died October 7, 2007 at the Belmond Medical Center. Services were held October 10 at the United Church of Rowan with Pastor Nancy Hofmeister officiating. Burial with military rites was in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Charles Frederick, the son of Fred and Minnie Deremo Kruger, was born April 1, 1917 in Dows. He lived in the Rowan and Dows area his entire life, attending country school and graduating from Rowan High School. Following graduation Chuck worked for Pete Kalkwarf until he joined the U. S. Army. He served as a forward observer in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Following his discharge, Chuck farmed and raised cattle, sheep and hogs. He and Shirley Wessels were married at her parent's home in Laurel, Iowa in 1951. They made their home in the Rowan area until 1983 when they moved to Belmond. Chuck was an active, community-minded person. He was a member of the United Church of Rowan where he served on several boards and committees. He was proud to have been a 60-year member of the Rowan American Legion, serving as a post commander as well as a county commander. Chuck will be remembered as a gentleman with a good sense of humor. He enjoyed coffee and socializing with friends. Spending time with family was a priority in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter Heidi; and brother-in-law Phil Tutt. Chuck is survived by his son Robert (Jo) of Alexander; grandchildren Erin of Mt. Pleasant and Brent, a student at Wartburg College; and sister Hazel Tutt of Ft. Dodge.
