KEARNEY — Charles F. Byers, 86, of Kearney died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at St. Luke’s Good Samaritan Village. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Fellowship Church with the Rev. Bruce Demmel officiating. Burial will be at Wood River Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.

He was born Sept. 29, 1921, near Wood River to Charles and Ethel (Judevine) Byers. In June 1943, he married Mildred Clarey. She preceded him in death. Survivors include his nephews, nieces and many friends.

He graduated from Wood River High School and spent three years studying at two Bible schools in South Dakota. While at Bible school, he met his future wife. He obtained his first preachers license in 1943 and was ordained in 1945. He was active in the ministry and as an evangelist. He was a pastor at churches in Fall City, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Clarion, Iowa. He and his wife were on the radio for approximately six years. They also conducted kids camps and Bible schools. He and his wife traveled all over the United States and Canada. During his travels, he visited a number of senior centers around the country and enjoyed the many fine meals and fellowship he found there. He enjoyed preaching and singing. He loved good religious music and gospel preaching on the radio or TV. He also enjoyed riding horses and hunting. He loved good food and having a good time, Nebraska football and sharing Jesus with people.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Holl. Memorials are suggested to the family.
