EAGLE GROVE — Arthur Spangler, Jr., the son of Arthur M. and Clara (Tuttle) Spangler, was born August 31, 1919 in Dayton Township near Eagle Grove. He was educated in rural schools of Wright County and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1938. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre receiving the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Good Conduct Medals. Art was honorably discharged on October 29, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On June 2, 1946, Art was united in marriage to Arlene Egemo at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Parsonage in Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June of 2006. Art worked as a mechanic for John Deere dealerships of S.C. Schrage Implement and Hanson Implement of Eagle Grove, and F.G. Jones Implement of Woolstock. He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Legion in Eagle Grove. Art loved fishing, working puzzles, flowers, working in his yard and his daily walks.

Art passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove at the age of 88 years and 4 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Arlene on December 31, 2006. Survivors include his three daughters, Linda VanVleet and husband John of Orient, Susan Holst and husband Ron of Webster City and Terri Jo Meyer and husband Larry of Eagle Grove; two granddaughters, Kris Holst of Addison, Ill., and Teresa DeCoursey and husband Paul of Fort Dodge; two great-grandchildren, Brennen and Karlee DeCoursey of Fort Dodge; three stepgrandchildren, Dr. Brad Meyer and wife Carrie of Omaha, Neb., Rebecca and Rachel Meyer of Eagle Grove; four brothers, Carroll, Kermit, Jack, and Abe, all of Eagle Grove; four sisters, Ina Mae Skadburg of Eagle Grove, Dorothy Buss of Mason City, Clarice Carlson of Britt, Emma Jean Bloxham of Clarion and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, September 7, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastors Paul Stone and Chris Lang officiating. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove.
