BELMOND - Funeral services for Sylvia Ellen Chapman Soma, 91, a former Belmond resident, will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. She died Monday (May 10, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City. The Rev. Jim Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Sylvia, daughter of Edwin and Julia Ann Wilson Chapman, was born Oct. 10, 1907, near Rowan. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1926. For a time she lived in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Secret Service. She attended college in Des Moines and taught in the rural school system near Belmond. On Feb. 27, 1933, Elmer S. Soma and Sylvia were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond. They farmed near Belmond until retirement in 1969. Sylvia had numerous interests and talents and enjoyed sharing them with others.

Left to cherish her memory are her seven children, Audrey and her husband, Richard Elliot, of San Diego, Calif., David and his wife, June Soma, of Britt, Phyllis and her husband, Rollie Jenison, of Ames, Sandra and her husband, Glendon Losen, of Mason City, Eloise and her husband, Robert Davis, of Mason City, Kathryn and her husband, Ronald Schroder, of Tampa, Fla., and Cheryl, of Eagle Grove. Eighteen grandchildren also survive her: Kathryn Richter, Laura Graham, Mark Elliot, Julie Torpey, Daniel Soma, Lisa Keller, Leigh Jenison, Neal, Eric, David, Valerie and Susan Losen, Paul, Andrea Davis, Kristin Hummel, Matthew, Michael and Susan Schroder. Sixteen great-grandchildren also are among the survivors. Her husband, her parents, six brothers, two sisters and three great-grandchildren preceded in her death. The family suggests that memorials be given in the name of Sylvia E. Soma.
