Doris H. Charleston, age 90, of Dows, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services for Doris Charleston will be held Saturday, July 28, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with Pastor Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Otis Grove Cemetery near Dows. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 27, 2007 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Dows and continue one hour prior to services.

Doris Henrietta Reingardt Charleston was born January 15, 1917 daughter of Henry A. and Carrie (Arnold) Reingardt at Colo, Iowa. At the age of three her parents bought land in Hardin County near Alden, Iowa. It was there that she started school at the age of five. She also helped her parents on the farm with chores and field work. The work was hard but she knew it had to been done. In 1928 the family moved to Williams, Iowa where she finished the 8th grade. At age 14 she started doing domestic work for others in the area. In 1936 on December 8th, she married Gilmen Charleston of Dows, Iowa at the Methodist parsonage in Popejoy, Iowa. To this union three children were born. Ruby (Bob) Sandy, of Indianola, Iowa, Marvin (Linda) Charleston, of Tuscumbia, Alabama, and Jenenne (Dennis) White, of Iowa Falls, Iowa. In 2001 she completed her GED courses at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa to fulfill a life's dream to finish her high school education. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church. She was also involved with the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, fishing, and most of all cooking and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her children, eight grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, two brothers, and four grandchildren.
