Betty Lou "Dixie" Abel, 70, Overland Park, KS, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997, at her home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, KS; burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice, 1625 W. 92nd St., Kansas City, MO, 64114; the American Cancer Society, 5960 Dearborn, Suite 100, Mission, KS, 66202; or Cancer Action, Inc., 1831 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS, 66102.

Dixie was born January 3, 1927, in Belmond, IA, the daughter of George and Catherine Johnson Hunst. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1945, and married Ronald Abel on March 31, 1946. They lived in Mason City, IA, for 12 years, moving to Des Moines, IA, for four years, moving to Mission, KS, and then to their present home in Overland Park, KS. She was a member of the Heartbeats, an auxiliary of SPEBSQSA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Glenn Hunst. Survivors include her loving husband, Ronald; and special family: two sons, Steven and his wife, Colleen Abel, League City, TX, and Edward and his wife, Nancy Abel, Wellsville, KS; two daughters, Jeanne and her husband, Kirk FitzGerald, Merriam, KS, and Joan and her husband, Mike Moore, Roeland Park, KS; a brother, Raymond Hunst, Des Moines, IA; a sister, Marie Schlagel, Belmond, IA; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives.
