David G. Sorenson, 65, of Newton died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, in Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A funeral service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Following burial, a coffeetime is planned from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Pence Tribute Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to David Sorenson Memorial Fund or Hospice of Jasper County. The son of Dr. Kermit and Iola (Archerd) Sorenson, he was born Sept. 30, 1941, in Clinton. He graduated from Sabula High School in Sabula in 1959. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Iowa Law School. While at the university, he was a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band. On June 22, 1963, he married Janice O. Helgevold in Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes. They lived in Iowa City prior to moving to Newton in 1966, when he joined Arnold Myrha in law practice in Newton and Colfax. He was a sole practitioner for many years and retired in 2002. He was a past member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association and the Jasper County Bar Association, serving a term as president. He also was a member of the Elks Club, Rotary Club, Newton Country Club and chairman of the Jasper County Republican Party. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed music, especially jazz and the big bands. He also enjoyed reading books on history.
He is survived by his wife; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Angela Sorenson of Overland Park, Kan., Matt and Carol Sorenson of Newton and Doug Sorenson and Kelly DeLong of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Gary VandeKamp of Clinton; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Georgene Sorenson of Green Valley, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin infant sons, Jeffrey and Scott Sorenson.
