Jan. 28, 2004BELMOND— Charles “Charlie” Leon Hellman, 61, of Ames, formerly of Belmond, passed away Monday (Jan. 26, 2004) at Riverside Manor in Ames. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Belmond. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Charlie was born in Perry on July 8, 1942, the son of Thorsten and Winifred (Hight) Hellman. He grew up in Jamaica, Iowa and graduated from Jamaica, Consolidated High School in 1961. In 1978, Charlie married Margaret Weinberger. To this union two children were born, Mary Margaret and Edward Charles. Charlie worked for Triggs Manufacturing in Perry and moved to Belmond with the company on Dec. 15, 1965. He worked at Triggs for six years. Charlie also worked for USS Agri Chemicals for 14 ˝ years from 1971 to 1986. He worked for Keifer Built for six years until he was unable to work anymore. Charile enjoyed fishing and photography. Charlie liked playing family games, being with his family and having coffee and talking with the True Value guys. Charlie belonged to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Masonic Lodge and was a life member of the DeMolay.
Charles is survived by the love of his life, Margaret Hellman of Belmond; one daughter, Mary Margaret and her special friend, Jesse Gamble, of Alexander; one son, Edward Charles and his wife, Shannon, of Belmond; one grandson, Jonathan Gamble of Alexander; one sister, Susan Gottschalk of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Keith and his wife, Pat, of Boone, and Edwin and his wife, Cherie, of Jamaica; two cousins, Gordon Hellman of Atlanta, Ga., and Ellen Hellman of Des Moines. Charles is preceded in death by his parents. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
