BELMOND - Eldon Lowell Eliason, 84, a lifelong resident of the Kanawha and Belmond areas, died Sunday (Feb. 10, 2002) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City. Eldon Eliason was born July 18, 1917, on his parent's farm near Kanawha, the son of John O. and Malina (Knutson) Eliason. He was baptized on Aug. 12, 1917, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church by the Rev. J.M. Jenson and later confirmed at the church on Dec. 27, 1931, by the Rev. Bernard Guldseth. He attended rural schools. Eldon and Maxine Hanson were united in marriage on Sept. 20, 1942, by the Rev. O.M. Seversike. Following their marriage the couple made their home, farmed, and raised their children on Eldon's home place. They raised crops and various livestock, including; feeder and dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry. Eldon also enjoyed tinkering and caring for his machinery, and salvaging old machinery for parts. He took great pride in his work. His love for the land and farming continued throughout most of his life, even after the couple moved into Belmond in 1983 following their retirement from farming. His heart was still devoted to farming even in his retirement years. Mr. Eliason, was a devoted husband and father, who enjoyed taking his family on annual fishing excursions to Northern Minnesota and spending Sunday afternoons taking his sons on more local fishing trips. He had also been on an exciting salmon fishing trip with his son on Lake Michigan. A favorite pastime in earlier years was pheasant and rabbit hunting. He and his wife had made several trips to Europe and New Zealand. The had especially enjoyed spending 30 years wintering in Mesa, Ariz.. In later years, he and Maxine had taken several bus tour vacations. After retiring from active farming, Eldon took up the game of golf, and greatly enjoyed it for the fresh air and exercise. He was an avid reader throughout his entire life, reading nearly anything he could get his hands on. He especially enjoyed current events. Mr. Eliason had served as a trustee at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, was a board member of the Kanawha Coop Oil Co. for nine years, and had served for three years on the Wright County Tax payer's Assoc. Board.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife of nearly 60 years, Maxine Eliason, of Belmond; sons, Kenneth and wife, Janice Elaison, of Kanawha, and Dennis and wife, Barbara Eliason, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and a daughter, Betty and husband, Heinz, of Wakefield, New Zealand; four grandchildren, Julie and Murray Andersen, of Orange City, Debra Eliason, of New Richland, Minn., Teresa Eliason, of Boulder, Colo., and Jeffrey Eliason, of Ann Arbor, Mich; also two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Angel Andersen, at home with their parents. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alma, Manel, Judith, Cora, Gladys, and Bertha; brothers, Orville, Oscar, Clarence, and Earl; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond, with Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral home, 516 First St. S. E. in Belmond and one hour prior to the services on Thursday at church. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, or to the donor's choice. Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home.
