BELMOND - Alfred C. Stadtlander, 83, of Belmond, entered the Kingdom of Heaven, when he died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Alfred C. Stadtlander, the son of Ernst and Ethel (Meyers) Stadtlander, was born on April 1, 1915, at Belmond, Iowa. He attended schools in the Belmond area and was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational Church, in Belmond. At a young age, he spent time doing a number of jobs that included working as a farmhand for area farmers, working with his brother, Ernie, on Highway 69 construction, and doing carpentry work for A.R. Dorr & Sons in Belmond. On Oct. 2, 1937, he was united in marriage to LaVonne Mason, of Clarion. Unto this union, five boys and two girls were born. After his marriage, Al held various occupations, including work as a drayman and a farmer. He made deliveries for the Fullerton Lumberyard and the Farmers Grain Elevator. Later, he was employed by the City of Belmond and the Wright County Road Maintenance until his disability in 1960. In retirement, Al spent his time gardening and playing cards and cribbage. He also attended many school events for his children and grandchildren who were very special to him. For the past 3 ½ years, Al had made his home at the Belmond Health Care Center, in Belmond.

Survivors include his seven children, Tom Stadtlander and his wife, Karen, of Belmond; Larry Stadtlander and his wife, Pat, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; Robert Stadtlander and his wife, Judie, of Iowa City; Janet Hennigar and her husband, Dennis, of Clarion; Richard Stadtlander, of Belmond; Jerry Stadtlander and his wife, Phyllis, of Waukee; and Marilyn TerHark and her husband, John, of New Hampton; 14 grandchildren; and five and 8/9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVonne in 1993; two brothers, Ernest and William; and a sister, Mary.
