BELMOND — Dwight Lynn Barkema, 56, of Belmond, passed away Saturday (July 16, 2005) at Wright County Hospice in the Belmond Medical Center following a courageous two-year battle with colo-rectal cancer. Funeral services for Dwight Barkema will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with the Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation for Dwight Barkema will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Dwight, the son of Junior and Viola (Pals) Barkema, was born Jan. 12, 1949, in Belmond. Dwight was raised in the Belmond-Meservey area and attended Belmond Community School, graduating in 1968. Dwight was employed by Central Soya in Belmond from the time he was 18 until he became disabled two years ago. Dwight was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where he was baptized, confirmed and graduated from catechism. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, watching movies and helping out on the family farm.

Dwight is survived by three children: Terisa Schlueter, her husband, Robert, and their daughter, Ella, of Des Moines, Suzanne Barkema-Cox, her husband, Chad, and their children, Joshua, Megan and Jacob of Prairie City, and Richard Barkema and his son, Devon; his mother, Viola Barkema, of Belmond; five brothers: Dean Barkema of Mason City, David Barkema and his wife, Jeanne, of Belmond, DuWayne Barkema and his wife, Dawn, of Cedar Falls, Douglas Barkema of Belmond, and Delwin Barkema and his wife, Dawn, of Belmond; one sister, Darla Gabrielson and her husband, Tad, of Carroll; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Junior Barkema, and sister-in-law, Nancy Barkema. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
