Roger Allen Nelson, 82, of Clarion, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Wright Medical Center, Clarion. A memorial service was held on Monday, October 2, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion. Pastor Curt Miner officiated at the 1:00 p.m. service. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Roger Allen Nelson, was born on August 11, 1924 in Eagle Grove, the son of John and Alma (Thompson) Nelsen. He was raised in Holmes and graduated from the Clarion High School in 1943. Roger served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Boyd from February 14, 1944 to April 8, 1946. On June 1, 1948, he married Doris Swope at the home of her parents. Doris and Roger resided in the Clarion area throughout their 58 year marriage. They farmed east of Clarion for 12 years and Roger later worked for the Iowa State Highway Department. He retired from the department in 1985. Roger loved spending time with family, friends and the ever present family dog, cat, or dog and cat. He loved gardening and enjoyed the outdoors.
Roger is survived by his wife, Doris of Clarion; one son, Larry Nelson and wife, Debbie of Clarion; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, John Nelsen and wife, Beverly of Goldfield and Don Nelsen and wife, Joann of Clarion; one sister, Janis Soma of Eagle Grove; and several nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Connie Nelson Smith.
