NORTHWOOD -- John L. Martin, 96, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, died Friday (July 5, 1996) at the Lutheran Retirement Home. Funeral services will held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Bents officiating. Interment will be in South Shellrock Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the John L. Martin Memorial Fund. Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 Eleventh Street South, is in charge of arrangements.

John was born on a farm near Greenfield March 7, 1900, the son of Ben and Anna Marie (Folcha) Martin. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1918. The family then moved to a farm near Glenville, Minn. John attended Hamilton College and worked a short time at the railroad station in Mason City. John married Annamae McBrearty March 14, 1924, at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage in Albert Lea, Minn. They made their home in Gordonsville, where he was employed in a garage. They later moved to Woolstock where he was also a mechanic. They moved to Albert Lea where he worked in a lumber yard. In 1928, they purchased a farm in Grove Township, rural Northwood, and lived there until 1944 when they moved into Northwood. He worked at the AAA office, Coast to Coast store, Holstad Motors, and before retiring, worked as a carpenter for Henry and Len Engen in Albert Lea and for his son, Don Martin, in Northwood. The Martins moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in February 1992. John was an active member of First Lutheran Church. He also enjoyed many hours of fellowship at the Northwood Senior Center.

John is survived by his wife, Annamae Martin of Northwood; one daughter, Anita Monus and her husband, Vic, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and two daughters-in-law, Nan Martin of Northwood and Rita Martin of Urbandale. He also is survived by grandchildren, Nancy Hengesteg and her husband, Gary, of Northwood; Dan Martin and his wife, Sandi, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Ron Martin of Fort Collins; Mike Martin and his wife, Teri, of Ames; Calli Peterson and her husband, Arne, of Des Moines; Tony Martin and his wife, Denise, of Des Moines; Kathy Soady and her husband, Gregg, of Sylmar, Calif.; and Mark Monus and his wife, April, of Pennfield, New Brunswick. Surviving great-grandchildren are Randy Hengesteg and his wife, Kim, of Northwood; Sonja Hengesteg of Minneapolis; Benji Martin, Angie Martin, Dannielle Martin and Ryan Martin, all of Fort Collins, Colo.; Amber Soady and Katie Soady, both of Sylmar, Calif.; Kyle Monus, Brandon Monus and Jared Monus, all of Pennfield, New Brunswick; Jennifer Grandstaff and her husband, Williams, of Story City; Joshua Martin of Ames; Cassie Peterson and Renae Peterson of Des Moines; and Jessica Martin, Matthew Martin and Stephanie Martin, all of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Don and Jim Martin; an infant sister, Pluma Martin; a sister, Blanche Thompto; and two brothers, Lloyd and Jack Martin.
