RACINE - Cameron V. Smith Ph.D., 89, formerly of Okoboji, Iowa, passed away at home on Sunday, June 3, 2007. Cam was born in Okoboji, Iowa on January 19, 1918, to Roy and Beth (nee: Allen) Smith. Cam graduated from Arnolds Park High School before attending William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. While at William Penn, he met Lillian Anderson and they were married on April 6, 1943, recently celebrating 64 years of marriage. Cam served in the China-Burma-India Theatre during World War II. He was in the Chemical Warfare Division of the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1946, achieving the rank of Captain. Prior to serving in the Army, Cam was a Teacher of science and math in the towns of Galt, Iowa and Primghar, Iowa. Upon retuning from the service, he taught science and math in Dubuque, Iowa and Spirit Lake, Iowa. In 1958, Cam earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and moved to Racine to work for the Racine Unified School District. From 1958 until his retirement in 1982, Cam's career in the school district included the positions of Science Helping Teacher, Science Consultant, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. In 1970, Cam received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cam was active in many civic and professional organizations, which included serving as President of the Kenosha-Racine Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers, and the Wednesday Optimists Club. Cam was a scientist and educator at heart, but was also known for his delightful personality, his quick wit, his poetry, his songwriting, his love of life, and his sense of humor. Cam was also a gifted athlete. He will truly be missed by family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Smith; children, Camille (Forrest Forque) Smith, Dennis (Jane) Smith, Candace (Jeffrey) Busarow, and Marla Smith; former son-in-law, Gregg Zurawski; grandchildren, Lindsey Smith, Christopher Smith, Emily Smith-Zurawski, and Nicholas Smith-Zurawski; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Audlehelm and Barbara Anderson. Cam is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Byron (Stella) Smith, Maynard (Margaret) Smith, and Byrnard (Dorothy) Smith; and sister and brothers-in-law, Marvelyn (Leroy) Furry, Ardeth Anderson, and William Audlehelm. Funeral services for Cam will be held in Wisconsin and in Iowa. On Thursday, June 7, 2007, at 6 p.m., a service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1013 Harmony Drive, with Revs. Mark Trump and Lois Grebe officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. There will be a coffee hour at the church following the service on Thursday. On Saturday, June 9, 2007, a Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Schuchert Funeral Home, 2317 32nd Street, Spirit Lake, Iowa, with interment to follow at the Okoboji Cemetery in Arnolds Park, Iowa. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Later in the week, a service will take place followed by interment at the Okoboji Cemetery in Arnolds Park, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Racine Community Foundation-Education Fund, Faith United Methodist Church, Arnolds Park Friends Church, Arnolds Park High School Alumni Association, or the American Heart Association. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Mount Pleasant Fire and Police Departments for their quick response, their caring presence, and the concern shown to Cam and our family.
