BELMOND -Stephen N. Hinman, 86, of Belmond, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Stephen N. Hinman was born Sept. 19, 1913, on the family farm west of Belmond, the son of Arthur C. and Marjorie (McGrann) Hinman. He lived and worked on the family farm until he went to college at Iowa City and then to Iowa State. Stephen came back to work on the family farm until he entered the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge he did carpentry work along with farming. He was united in marriage to Hazel Tegland on June 17, 1945, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond. They farmed together west of Belmond until their retirement in 1977. He was very active in his church, serving in many offices, as Sunday School superintendent for 25 years, as did his father and grandfather. He and Hazel served many years as secretary and treasurer of the Belmond United Church of Christ. He kept his farmstead in immaculate condition, and his articles of woodworking will always remind family and friends of his craftsmanship and intricate inlaid and marquetry in wood. He enjoyed playing cribbage, his exotic garden, enjoyed traveling, was a self-taught organ player and was a member of the Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of Belmond; sons, Stephen A. Hinman and his wife, Sharion, of Belmond, Donald Hinman of New York, N.Y., Wayne Hinman, of Belmond and David Hinman, of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren, Chad and Anthony Hinman, of Cedar Rapids, Maryann Hinman, of Independence, Neal Hinman and his fiancée, Jessica Yenter, of Stanhope, and Michele Miltenberger and her husband, Jason, of Des Moines; brother, George Hinman and his wife, Imogene, of Belmond; and sisters, Ellen Ahlstrom of Aplington, and Ruth Baldwin of Victorville, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Tenold Funeral Home
