BELMOND — Robert Henry Slining, 76, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at the Concord Care Center in Garner. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Robert Henry Slining, the son of Harry and Eunice (Reed) Slining, was born on June 26, 1922, in Belmond. Bob grew up in a family of eight children on his parents' farm. He graduated from Belmond High School. He began work as a hired farm hand in the local community and eventually began farming for himself. On Sept. 30, 1944, Bob was united in marriage to Donna Benson. She passed away on Jan. 7, 1970. Bob was united in marriage to Martha Klinge on Dec. 1, 1970, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond. Bob was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond, where he served on the Board of Trustees for several years. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, garden tilling and lawn work. He also had an interest in antique cars, one of which he refinished himself.

Survivors include his wife, Martha, of Belmond; daughter, Roxanne Patterson of St. Louis, Mo.; son, Lynn Slining of Des Moines; stepdaughter, Delorys Lonnevik and her husband, Marvin, of Britt; stepsons, Lyle Klinge of Seneca, S.C., and Kendall Klinge and his wife, Susan, of Belmond; son-in-law, Dennis Didio of Belmond; four sisters, Mildred Macri and her husband, Michael, of Des Moines, Arlene Davis and her husband, Donald, of Harlan, Joann Kuester and her husband, Irv, of Belmond, and Janet Thornton and her husband, Richard, of Huxley; two brothers, Glen Slining of Silverton, Colo., and Harry Slining Jr. and his wife, Marlene, of Babbitt, Minn.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Slining of Belmond; five grandchildren, Stacey, Michelle, Gina, Diena and Ryan; four step grandchildren, Amber, Ashley, Tanner and Shaina; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lucas and Tristan. Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Donna, in 1970; daughter, Kathy Didio; brother, Duane; and a sister in infancy.
