John R. Schmidt, 102, of Meservey, died Wednesday (May 27, 1998) at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester, officiating. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grarup Funeral Home, Meservey.

John R. Schmidt was born on Sept. 27, 1895 to Roelf and Altje (Pals) Schmidt on a farm near Palsville in Pleasant Township, Wright County, Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools in Wright County. On June 21, 1918, he married Tena Ostendorf of Alexander. To this union were born five children: Ralph, Esther, Arlene, Frances and Loraine. John farmed for 27 years and moved to Meservey in 1946 where he engaged in selling seed corn and other farm seeds. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Meservey and served on the school board.

He is survived by three daughters, Arlene Kaldenberg, of Denver, Colo., Frances Groen, of Meservey, Iowa, and Loraine Bertilson, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers, four sisters, one son, and one granddaughter.
