Bernard LeRoy Davenport, 87, of Belmond, died Sunday (July 14, 1996) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, in Belmond, with the Rev. William Mulford officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond.

Bernard LeRoy Davenport, the son of Frank and Cora (Harvey) Davenport, was born on Sunday, May 16, 1909, in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1927, where he was a member of the Latin Club and track team. Bernard lived most of his life on the Davenport family farm west of Belmond which he owned following the death of his mother. The farm was designated
a Century Farm in 1993. Bernard was united in marriage to Marlyce L. Harson on Jan. 8, 1934, in Mason City. Marlyce preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 1981. In addition to farming most of his life, he worked at Central Soya and for various construction contractors. He liked to spend his leisure time fishing, playing cards, checkers and cribbage. Reading was a lifelong joy for Bernard and while in the Care Center, books were his constant companions. Bernard delighted in seeing his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bernard was a member of the Belmond United Church of Christ Congregational, and a 49-year member of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodge.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Watermiller of Belmond, Mrs. Duan (Linda) Thompson of Belmond, Corrine Waller of Belmond, and Mrs. Tom (Lorraine) Robeson of Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Bob, Jim and Randy Watermiller, Rindee Watermiller Erdmann, Jeff and Jenifer Waller, Dick, Diane and Gerald Thompson, Linette Thompson Myland, Dan Robeson, Dawn Robeson Havey and Nicole Robeson; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Bohning of Belmond. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlyce; a brother, Ammon; a sister, Beatrice Bohning; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
