MASON CITY - Zelda Bernice Shaw, 88, formerly of Rowan, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2000) at Good Shepherd Home in Mason City. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will be in the Rowan Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Tuesday.

Zelda Bernice (Hackley) Shaw, the daughter of Benjamin and Jennie (Alexander) Hackley was born in Franklin County on July 12, 1912. She was united in marriage to Oscar Shaw on Dec. 17, 1933, at Clarion. They made their home in Wright County, mostly in Rowan. Oscar was a bricklayer and they traveled extensively during World War II following defense work. Oscar died on Nov. 13, 1972, and Zelda continued to live in Rowan until 1981 when she moved to Mason City. She lived in senior housing and then with failing health moved to the Good Shepherd Health Care Center where she died on Friday, Nov. 10. Zelda attended the Rowan school system, graduating from high school in 1931. Barely five feet tall, she was an all-conference basketball player. She was a fierce competitor which continued all through her life.

She is survived by her two children, Donald and his wife, Mary, of Belmond and Patricia Meyer and her husband, Harold, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Kathleen Martinson and her husband, Bruce, Carl Shaw and his wife, Sara, Connie Shaw, Daniel Shaw, Elizabeth Shaw, Barbara Hanson and her husband, Todd, and Brian Meyer; five great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
