Gary Eugene Harper passed away Monday May 7, 2007, at the age of 65. Gary was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa. His family moved to Humboldt County from Iowa in 1948. Gary worked alongside his parents and sisters in their mink ranch in McKinleyville while growing up. He graduated from Arcata High School and later Shasta College in Redding. He enjoyed a 30 year career with Pacific Bell before retiring in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, he was well known for using his catch and his produce to create pickles, sausages and smoked meats and enjoyed sharing his creations with family and friends.
He is survived by his spouse, two children, six grandchildren, four siblings with families, and many friends: his wife of 11 years, Carol Ray; his daughter, Lorrena Filgas with spouse Joe and children Madeline and Ryan; his son, William Harper with his spouse Amy and children Chloe, Annika, Sierra, and Dante; his sisters, Sharon Lopez with spouse Al (AKA “bro”) and their children Mike and Theresa, Aldean Pethan with spouse Meryl and their daughter Kathrine, and Joanne Salcido with spouse Hector and their children Chelsea, Garrett, Michael, Melissa; his brother, Harold Hanson with spouse Karin; as well as some very good friends. A memorial service will be held at Pierce Chapel in Eureka at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2007. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to the American Cancer Society.
