Bruce E. Avery, 81, of Dows, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Waverly American Legion Post No. 176. Bruce was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Elgin. He grew up and attended school in Shell Rock. Bruce served in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to the Plainfield area, where he farmed for many years. He also worked as a machinist for Shield Bannon in Waverly.

Bruce was united in marriage to Margy E. Wilkinson on Jan. 20, 1982, in Manly. The couple retired to Dows, where Bruce enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Dows. Bruce is survived by his wife, Margy, of Dows, five sons, John, Norman, Roger, Steve and Joe Avery; one stepdaughter, Luci Blanchard and her husband, Dennis; one brother, Vern Avery; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Freda Avery; and several sisters and brothers. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of the arrangements.
