ca. March 1932Wm. J. Culmer was born at Northville, La Salle county, Ill., Aug. 17th, 1865. He was the oldest son of John and Sara Culmer. He spent the greater part of his life in and around Northville with the exception of five years in the west. On Jan. 19th, 1919 he moved to Lake Odessa, Mich.,. where he was engaged in farming until Feb. 29th, 1932 when he had a sale and retired from the farm. On March 6th, he contracted a severe cold which developed in double pneumonia and death came on March 9th, [1932] he being at the time of his death, 66 years, 6 months and 21 days of age. He was tenderly cared for during his sickness by his niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Branson, of Saranac, Mich. He was a kind, honest and industrious man, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in time of need. His sole desire was to make a home for his aged mother and invalid brother, R. D. this brother preceded him in death three months ago.
Those left to mourn his departure are his aged mothers, two brothers, Chas. Culmer, Ft. Dodge, Iowa; Dallas Culmer, Woolstock, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Kate Wroot, Corona, Cal.; Mrs. Mary Ann Beebe, Sandwich; Mrs. Frank Elwood, Somonauk, and Mrs. Frank Schumacher, Sandwich, and 32 nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frank Ellwood, in Somonauk Monday, March 14th, at two p.m. Burial was in Northville cemetery besides his father. Services were in charge of Elder Joseph M. Blakely of Plano. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Wm. Allen and Fred Skelding, Lake Odessa, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Ward Branson, Saranac, Mich.; Chas. Culmer, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hengesbach, Mrs. Alice Ashley, Chas. Hunter, Wm. Edinburg and Mrs. Hulda Monroe, all of Aurora; Geo. Kimpan, Harry Skau, Chas. Ziegler and Wm. Pitcher, all of Hinckley; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shuning, Mrs. Elizabeth Culmer, Roy Gregory, all of Plano; Alfred Tisler, Emil Loux, Miss Sophia Loux and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Caquelin, all of Serena; Jule Grandgeorge, C. P. Tyrrell and Mrs. Irene Massett, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rumney, all of Northville; Mr. and Mrs.Harry Pew of Yorkville; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schumacher, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Schumacher, Miss Gladys Schumacher, June Schumacher, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cooper, Fred Schumacher, Mrs. Lizzie Vincent, Mrs. Clint Rogers, Mrs. Eva Culmer, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Buland, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Minnich and Doris, Mr. and Mrs. Edw. Smith, Albert Genger, Hosea Ballou and Mrs. Mary A. Beebe, all of Sandwich.
