BELMOND -- Mary G. Merfeld, 86, of Belmond, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 1995) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father Tom Currier, Father John O'Conner and deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Dougherty. Visitation will begin at noon today at Tenold Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. rosary led by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Rosary Society; and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

Mary Genevieve (Murphy) Merfeld, the daughter of John Murphy and Rose Murphy (nee) Reilly was born Dec. 23, 1908, at Dougherty. At an early age, she and her family moved to Minnesota for a short time and moved back to the Dougherty-Rockwell area. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Dougherty. Mary was united in marriage to Albert Merfeld at St. John's Catholic Church in Cartersville. They farmed in the Dougherty area until 1974 when they retired to Belmond. Mary was very active in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the St. Francis Rosary Society. The family wants to remember Mary as a homemaker and her great love for her children and grandchildren. She had a wonderful talent for making cinnamon rolls for all the family occasions.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon McLaughlin and her husband, Stephen, of Belmond; Mary Ellen McLaughlin and her husband, Richard, of Vienna, W. Va.; and Jane Copple and her husband, Richard, of St. Charles, Mo.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter Murphy, Edward Murphy and Francis Murphy, all of Mason City, and James Murphy of Marshalltown; sisters, Sister Mary Ellen of Algona, and Maurice Dougherty of Dougherty; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert, on May 9, 1994; brothers, the Rev. Joseph Murphy, Vincent Murphy; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
