BELMOND - Edith A. Shirer, 79, of Belmond passed away Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services for Edith A. Shirer will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond cemetery. Visitation for Edith A. Shirer will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Edith Ann (Schrage) Shirer was born April 22, 1922, near Allison, Iowa, in Butler County, the daughter of Ernest and Minnie (DeBower) Schrage. She was baptized May 14, 1922, at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmer, Iowa, and confirmed April 5, 1936, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Allison High School in 1939. She attended business college in Des Moines. On July 4, 1943, she married William A. Shirer in Denver, Colorado. In 1948 they moved to Belmond and she worked many years for the R.W. Courson Insurance Agency. She was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and worked with the Cub Scouts. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three sons: Thomas Shirer and his wife, Avis, of Britt, Iowa; Steven Shirer and his wife, Karen, of Williamston, Michigan; and Michael Shirer and his wife, Karen, of Pasadena, California. Three granddaughters: Jennifer, Elizabeth and Allison. Two brothers: Robert Schrage and his wife, Erma, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; Lester Schrage and his wife, Ann, of Allison, Iowa; and one sister, Viola, and her husband, Charles M. Mosher, of Allison, Iowa. One brother-in-law, Robert F. Shirer, and his wife, Mary Jo, of Atlanta, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Shirer, in 1973, one brother, Eugene Schrage, and her parents. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home
