Mary Mendell, 91, of Dows, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Higley Mansion Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Services were held Friday, Jan. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Dows. Reverends Tony Hershey and James Turner officiated.
Mary was born June 2, 1909, at Nokomis, Ill., to Robert and Luella Bevill Ludwick. After graduation from Nokomis High School she moved to Detroit, Mich., and was employed by Bell Telephone Company. On July 27, 1929, she married Willard Mendell in Detroit, and they moved to Dows and farmed until retiring to Dows in 1960. She was active in the Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for 17 years. Mary was also a member of the Morgan Study Club and the Liberty Club for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Shahan and husband, Donald, of Cedar Rapids, and Doris Cash and husband, Edgar, of Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; and three brothers. The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
